Overview

Hutchies' photography style is confident, raw, strong, natural, vibrant and above all, fun.

We use photography to capture our people and projects to document our history and help visually articulate our story.

This guide sets out our expectations and tips to achieve Hutchies' look and feel for photography. We take a simple and professional approach to achieve professional and stand out imagery to make it relatable to our diverse audiences. Good photography is a fundamental tool in how we market to:

  • Institutional clients
  • Government
  • Private developers
  • Families / home owners
  • Our people
  • Our subbies and suppliers
  • The community

These are our best moments and the way we finish the imagery to tell a consistent story about our business, our people, and the great work we do. This guide outlines a variety of standards that we have developed to ensure we are consistent in how we portray our business. It stipulates the specific requirements for our collateral and visual communications.

Its important we avoid the following with our photography:

  • Over editing
  • Unnatural colours (ie too much contrast / saturation)
  • Messy alignment

In summary, this guide provides guidance on:

  • How to photograph our people, capturing the true essence of what they do, in the context of their working environment, and for various uses
  • Standard guidelines and examples for photographing our projects throughout construction and when completed
  • The various tools, machinery, materials and detailed imagery we like to use throughout our branding.

People

Hutchies’ success comes down to our people. The way they are portrayed in our collateral, our online presence and our tender submissions is fundamental to our story.

Every day, our people demonstrate the ‘Hutchies way’. They are approachable, yet professional; warm, yet reserved; open to different viewpoints, but uncompromising on quality, safety and ethics.

We use different styles of shots for different purposes. Corporate images are used for tender and proposal submissions to larger, corporate clients. Our casual shots are aligned to our culture of being no-nonsense, down-to-earth people who get the job done.

Our two main types of people photos used across our CVs, submissions and online include:

  • Portrait Style (simple background) - mostly used for CVs
  • Profile Style (in context - blurred out background) - mostly used for website and campaigns

Events

Sod Turning Ceremonies

Photos should capture:

  • Site / equipment
  • Signage
  • Event setup
  • Groups with shovels
  • Individuals with shovels if they want
  • If Scott Hutchinson is there, a photo with dirt being shoveled in the air (action shot)
  • People mingling before / after

Given these events are normally media opportunities, a timely turn around in photos back to Hutchies' Comms Team & Project Team is appreciated.

Projects

Our projects demonstrate the outcomes our people achieve. They are bricks and mortar testaments to our capability.

When we finish a job, having good photography ensures we maximise opportunities for long term marketing of it to win future projects. It's really important we get it right the first time, often its hard and expensive if we need to go back and try to do it again.

We capture project images to demonstrate our achievements and capability. Each and every project has its own distinct features – but they are not always obvious. It pays to ask the right questions so you can capture the uniqueness of each project and deliver the best possible outcomes from a shoot.

What were the technical challenges of the project? Is there something special about the building services? Remember to capture things that may not necessarily be aesthetically beautiful, but demonstrate functional design. Things like signage, lifts, car parks and kitchen can tell an important story to a potential client.

Important things we aim for:

  • Completed and ready projects (furniture in, artwork hung, signage finished - don't photograph it too early when its empty and stark)
  • Good alignment / straight lines (simplicity in angles fits the 'less is more' look for us)
  • Activation of place (people using our buildings)
  • Overall context (showing how our buildings fit into their environments - either from the street or the air)
  • Hutchies' signage, tools and equipment on sites
